Sunday in Shanghai

Sunday, 14 June 2015

Yes, well, there's not much to report from me as my day consisted of making it to meals on time and a very, very short stroll around after dark to see more lights.

Gary, however, was quite busy trotting around outside during the day so the photos are mostly about his doings.

And what was he doing?  Figuring out which window in the hotel was ours - and there were a whole lot of windows to choose from.

Gary's photo
We are in the top row of standard sized windows, second from the right.  We not only had to use my brother's piece of paper in the window method but also had to open the two small window panels and for good measure I stuck my hand out and waved.  Probably a bit hard to see all that, though the photo can be enlarged by clicking on it.

While I was waiting for Gary to get to the agreed photo-taking spot I took these photos.  Gary is on the pedestrian crossing in the middle of the photo, just in front of the white car driving across it. The cars don't stop and barely slow down and the scooters are worse.

My own camera has a good zoom but nothing like the one on Gary's spare camera which was able to zoom in to take this photo of Gary wandering off down the road to go on with his walk.

Again after tea we wandered around outside.  It was still very hot and muggy and I was glad I hadn't bothered going out during the day.  Sadly the lights on Eddington House weren't illuminated but there were plenty of other things going on as we walked around the block behind the hotel.

There are a lot of fountains around but this one was extra good because of the coloured light show that went along with it - not sure if the tribe of plastic pandas were an asset.

Around another corner and through a small market we found the Jing'an Temple, which gives this district its name.  From the time of the Cultural Revolution until 1983 it was used as a plastic factory but is now restored to its function as a Buddhist temple.

Next to the Salvador Dali sculpture (and I realise I haven't yet included a photo of that) is a round platform with some metallic sheep on it with ginko leaves in the background.  I took this photo on an angle to eliminate the sheep!

Ginko leaves
We will have missed the fall of the ginko leaves at home and it's usually one of the highlights of autumn for me.

Here's the whole display with the Dali sculpture in the background on the left.

Back at the hotel Gary finally cheered up when some of his internet sites started working again.

Happy internet face
