Bucharest [River Cruise: Day 1]

Sunday, 26 April

Arrive in Bucharest

Flight from Heathrow to Bucharest
A little after midnight (this morning) we arrive in Bucharest at the end of our longest flying day of the trip (LA - Heathrow - Bucharest).

Time for a bit of a snooze at the hotel before we really get into our first day in Europe.

River Cruise: Day 1

I'm finding this quite hard to get my head around but Day 1 of the river cruise is arriving at the hotel in Bucharest and, well, doing our own thing.  We sleep at the hotel overnight tonight and board the boat about 4pm tomorrow, which is Day 2.

We have looked online at the area around the hotel and it looks interesting enough to keep us entertained if we have quite recovered from yesterday's travel.

Midnight Notes

A quick note to say we've made it to Bucharest.  It's now 2.30 am (Sunday, 26 April) and we're heading off to bed after a very long travelling day.  Will update the blog (and sort out the developing problem with the dates) when we wake up.

Later

Since we landed in Bucharest after midnight that should probably appear in today's post - not that there is much to report other than it took rather a long time for the bags to appear on the carousel. The passport control officer clearly thought we were idiots when we dithered about 'where have you come from'.  LA?  Heathrow? New Zealand?  We think it might have been easier with a bit of paper to fill in as he wanted to know the flight number!

No trouble finding the driver of the transfer to the hotel and checked in without any difficulty.  Very nice room, no doubt somewhat bigger than the one of the boat will be.

We managed to get off to breakfast about 10am and loitered there almost until it was time for the buffet was closed.  After that we checked in with the Avalon rep and headed out for some sunshine and sight-seeing.

Ateneul Roman (Romanian Athenaeum)
The Romanian Athenaeum (a concert hall) is right outside the hotel's front doors and the weather was just perfect for strolling around looking at the buildings.
