We had an optional excursion booked for today - seeing the Romanian Palace of the Parliament. This is a crazily oversized building all-but-completed by the communist dictator Nicolae Ceau?escu before the revolution of 1989.
When planning this trip Gary showed me pictures of the inside of the building I couldn't believe that it was so modern but after taking the 2km 300 stair tour it's just hard to believe it exists at all. When we finished the tour our guide, Daniella told us we had now seen 3% of the building. The only part that wasn't wildly over the top were the toilets - I had hoped for great things. :o)
I'd better add some photos:
The whole building was a monument to chandeliers - this was the first one we saw! |
Detail of the columns |
More beautiful chandeliers |
The doors at the end slide into the walls making this already enormous room three times the size |
More chandeliers |
And more (very beautiful) chandeliers |
The scale of the rooms was incredible |
These rooms with apparent skylights were actually on the lower floors of the building |
The number of chairs gives an idea of the scale |
Detail of the roof with openings for natural ventilation as the building is not air-conditioned |
View from the balcony |
Looking at the building from the outside (with Gary!) |
